Get Rid of Clutter: Declutter by Organizing Your Home
There are times when our home looks so cramped with all those unnecessary things stacked on almost every available space. Once this “look” gets on your nerves then it is time to clean up, de-clutter and organize what you have.
Organizing and cleaning may take time. Decide how many hours and what time you want to do this and follow the schedule until everything looks tidy. Have boxes and label them as “Give Away” and “Put Away”. Have big garbage bags as your “Throw Away” container. By placing the items on the garbage bags it is convenient for you to carry the bag to the trash can.
Be organized in doing the task. Start with one room until it is done then move to the next one on your list. Do a particular area of the room then another area. Do not skip areas because this will make you forget and get back to cleaning that area.
Ask yourself questions when deciding to give, keep or throw away an item. Is this something I need? Is the item broken or inoperable? Does the item have sentimental value? Will somebody else in the family need this item? There is no need to feel guilty about giving something that someone has given to you. Who knows it might be of use by the one you are giving to. Can I sell this item? Do I have a better one? Another option is gather those things that are working and can be sold in garage sales or online through eBay or Craigslist.
Once you are done with a room then throw away what needs to be thrown away and place the “Give Away” and “Put Away” boxes in a place that you can evaluate once you are done with all rooms in the house.
The “Put Away” items need to have space so determine which closet or area in the basement or attic they are to be placed. Buy stackable bins, vacuum bags or build additional shelves to accommodate these items. Be sure to label and organize how the storage solutions will be placed.
You are now de-cluttering and organizing your home once you go through the exercise. You might want to rearrange the layout of the room for more space as well as clean those areas unreachable during regular cleaning.
For desks, be sure to tidy up the drawers. Place pens, envelopes, clips and other small items in a box or a canister. Check documents and throw or shred those that are not needed. Keep important documents in plastic folders and keep them in a dry and safe place.
Getting rid of clutter and organizing your home is not such a big task as you perceive it to be. If done on a daily basis and in an organized manner, the task will be completed in no time. What it needs is determination and patience. It can also be a family activity to involve those who occupy the room like your children. Your spouse should also get involved especially when it comes to documents.
Once the de-cluttering is done and all items stored then you can start decorating the rooms with items that you may have found. You will notice a different ambiance with a clean and tidy room.
